How can I love as Jesus loves?
In order to love you must first be connected to the source of love. If we establish that the root of all love comes only from God, then in order to love others one must first seek the love of God.
How can a tree bear fruit if it is not connected to the water that gives it life?
For us, in our day to day lives this means seeking the presence of God. It is through being filled by his love that we can reflect that love outwards to the people around us. Imagine a great waterfall with thousands of pounds of water pounding downwards from above. This waterfall is so vast you could never possibly ingest all the water crashing down from above. As the water careens downwards, it gives life to everything that would seek to soak in the life-giving flow from above. Those who close themselves off from the flow begin to die inwardly since they are cutting themselves off from the source of life. However, those who open themselves up to the waterfall of God’s love from above are filled with life that begins to overflow from within. “Keep your heart with all vigilance for from it flow springs of life.” (Proverbs 4:23) This overflowing of life within the heart of a person comes only from that individual seeking the life-giving flow of God from above.
For someone to have love overflowing from within they must first be connected to the flow of love from above. For those who are constantly connected to the love of God they are constantly overflowing with love. This overflow can be poured out upon those around us. You need to receive love vertically to give love horizontally.
When we come across someone who is dying inwardly, we can pour out love upon them from the never ceasing love that is flowing into us from our Father in heaven. For those who do not have a relationship with God. They are as a tree planted in a desert without any source of water. They are dying because they have been cut off from life.
When Jesus died on the cross, he made a way for us to once again be re-connected to the life-giving love of God. He tore the vail in two and made a way for us to once again be connected to the Father. Jesus conquered when He lay down His life that we might live in Him. In order for us to receive our inheritance of life we must re-connect ourselves to the source which is Jesus.
As Christians here on earth our greatest calling is to love God and to love others. In order to love others, we must be connected to the love of God. To be connected to the love of God is seek a relationship with Him above all else. It is feeding the Holy Spirit that is within us by spending time in prayer and time in the Word. The word is God,
“In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God.” (John 1:1)
To spend time in the word is to spend time with God. To spend time in prayer is to spend time in communication with God. The apostle Paul instructs on this topic in his letter to the Thessalonians.
“Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 3:17)
To pray without ceasing is to be continually connected to the life-giving source that is God. To pray without ceasing is to be constantly open to the waterfall of love that the Father is constantly pouring out on us. When we are connected to this source continually then we can love others in the way Jesus loves because we will be simply reflecting His unconditional love outwards towards others to give life to them as He has given it to us.
We are basically just gardeners seeking to pour out the life-giving love of God to a parched and thirsty generation of people who have been blinded to the truth. To love as Jesus loves is to let His love overflow in our hearts and to share that abundance with the people around us. Be continually seeking the love of Jesus.
“Seek first the Kingdom of God and all these things will be added onto you.” (Matthew 6:33)
Seek Love above all else. Seek Jesus above all else and you will love as he loved.
